Princess Grace Kelly
1889-1960: Grace Kelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John
Brendan Kelly, Sr. and Margaret Katherine Majer on October 4, 1889. Her
dream was to become an actress, so she left New York after high school and
did some modeling work. She appeared on magazine covers, and studied at the
American Academy of Dramatic Art. Kelly won a best actress Oscar in 1954 for
The Country Girl with Bing Crosby.She is better known for playing a gorgeous
blonde in three Alfred Hitchcock films: Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and
To Catch a Thief. The musical comedy High Society (1956) was her last film
appearance. She married Prince Rainer on April 18, 1956. They had three
children: Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite, Albert II of Monaco, and
Princess Stephanie Marie Elisabeth. As a condition of marriage, she was
required to give up her American citizenship. After marrying Prince Rainer,
he banned the showing of all her movies in Monaco. The people of Monaco no
longer w anted their princess to act in future movies. Throughout her
lifetime, Princess Grace of Monaco was dedicated to helping young artists
realize their career goals. The Princess Grace Foundation continues to
support young talented theater, dance and film artists to this day. In 1993,
USA and Monaco released a commemorative postage stamp to honor her. She was
the first actress to appear on a United States postage stamp. The U.S.
honored her as Grace Kelly and Monaco honored her as "Princess Grace". It is
said she died of a stroke while driving June 20, 1960. |
