Doris Day was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhof in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA (her grandparents were German immigrants). The second of two children, she was named "Doris" after silent movie actress Doris Kenyon, whom her mother liked. Born on April 3, 1924. As a child she had hopes of becoming a professional dancer, Day started out as a dancer, winning a contract that enabled her to travel to Hollywood, California with her partner, Jerry Doherty, in 1936, but turned to singing when she injured her leg in an auto accident in 1937.

Devastated that her dancing hopes were shattered, Doris applied her talents elsewhere. She began taking singing lessons and was promoted by her tutor, who managed to get her some airtime on a local radio station. She was brought to the attention of bandleader Barney Rapp, who signed her up to perform with his band. At this time Doris Kappelhof became Doris Day, taking the name from one of her favorite songs, 'Day After Day'. She sang with differnent big bands such as of Bob Crosby, and Les Brown, and entertained troops during the war before setting out on her own in the late 1940s.

She charted twelve popular music hits, among them her first two # 1's: "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time". On her own, she had more # 1's, including "Secret Love". Day acted in many films, in most of which she sang. Day began her film career in musicals, starting in 1948 as a peppy, Betty Huttonesque persona. Her first film was Romance on the High Seas. Many films followed comedies, muiscals and serious drama, with Doris starring alongside such movie greats as Cary Grant, and made her last film With Six You Get Eggroll in 1968.

She married her first husband while with Les Brown and soon left concentrate on her family, her son Terry was born 1942. She divorced her first husband do to his violent ways. She was married four time but her third husband/agent Marty Melcher, he died in 1968, at the end of her career. Doris decovered that Marty had mismanaged her finances which left her in debt as well as signed her to host the Doris Day show on TV which ran from1968-1973. In 1976 she married her fourth husband which ended in 1979. Doris now lives in California and devotes her time to caring for animals.
