“Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” This was the first proposal for our independence from the country of Great Britain. Yet, do you know who said this? It was president Richard Henry Lee, the real sixth president of the United States, not John Quincy Adams. One of the presidents in Congress assembled that were cursed to be presidents under the Articles of Confederation. But why honor a failed government, "A" for effort right? More like "F" for Freaking sucks, as someone put it. No, honor the great man who was not a failure, but was cursed with a failure for a government. President Lee was an excellent politician from Virginia. Colonel of this local militia during the Revolutionary war, and the would be writer of the Declaration of Independence, but his wife was stricken ill. He was also outspoken on slavery. His idea, "to lay so heavy a duty on the importation of slaves as effectually to put an end to that iniquitous and disgraceful traffic within the colony of Virginia" was called the most extreme speech on slavery before the nineteenth century. This great man did so much to preserve our freedom and yet, he is like I claimed before almost omitted from history. How much would it really cost if he just got a humble monument for his dedication to our country which has barely given him any credit after all these years.
