On March 26, 1979 the Prime Minister of Israel signed the Israel Egypt Peace Treaty. This treaty is also known as the Camp David Accords. The treaty is one of the most important events to ever occur in the Middle East. This man's name is Menachem Begin.

Menachem Begin was born in Russia in 1913. Soon after his birth, his family moves to Russia to escape the German and Russian armies of World War I. At a young age, He becomes a leader in the Zionist movement. They encourage the creation of a Jewish home in the Land of Israel, where the Jewish nation began.

In 1940, Josef Stalin's secret police send Begin to prison. British authorities believed he was a terrorist. They believe he helped plan the 1946 bombing of the British headquarters in Jerusalem. 92 people died. Many others were wounded.

Begin is responsible for turning his underground actions into the moderate Herut Party. The Herut Party is often called the Freedom Party and later becomes what is the modern Likud Party.

He was elected to the Israeli government in 1949. In 1977, he’s elected as the Prime Minister of Israel. In 1978, Menachem Begin and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt signed a peace treaty called the Camp David Accords. This was an important part in ending Arab rivalry against Israel.

The success of Begin, Sadat, and American President Jimmy Carter showed other Arab states and Arab groups that making peace with Israel is possible.

In 1978 the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to both Prime Minister Menachem Begin and President Anwar al-Sadat.
