CONGRESSWOMAN ASHLEY JORDAN'S OFFER TO THE PUBLIC

I purpose that we create a monument to commemorate a great man in America's history, Thomas McKean. For those of you who don't know who this man is let me tell you. Thomas McKean was the second president under the Articles of Confederation, but he was more than that and he did more than that. He was born in Pennsylvania but later moved to Delaware where he utilized family connections to start a carrier in politics. McKean held many public offices while he lived in Delaware. He was sent to the first continental congress in September 1774 as a delegate for Delaware. McKean was very passionate about the cause that all the men at the continental congress were fighting for. He felt that the British had "no right to regulate American affairs in any way." In 1776, McKean cast his vote for freedom before leaving to command a battalion of troops to help Washington in the Perth Amboy, New Jersey. McKean did a lot before he became president and before the Declaration of Independence; which he signed. Once the Declaration was authenticated and the Revolutionary war was over, McKean helped frame the Delaware Constitution and signed the Articles of Confederation. He was elected speaker of the assembly of Delaware in 1777 and then the president of Delaware. He resigned from his position as Delaware's president when he was called to serve as Pennsylvania's chief justice. He finally served as president of congress from 1781 to 1782. Now that you know a little about this great man let me tell you what I plan for a monument; a library. A library filled with information about the revolutionary time period. This would be open to the public and it wouldn't be something just to look at. It would be of use to people; it would give people a resource to find all the information they want about this time period, all the people of this time period, and how our great nation came to be. That's why we need to create this monument. When I began you all probably were thinking "we could use this money for educational purposes" and that is what this money would be used for. Just think of it as putting 3 million dollars towards a better education for your children and grand children. This would be the Thomas McKean Memorial Library.
