“Pork Barrel became a
political term in the post-Civil War era. A “pork barrel” is a wooden
barrel full of salted pork given out to the slaves by the plantation
owners. When it’s used as political term, it means that people get more
jobs, and the president gets credit for it. However, not everybody gets
treated equally. Pork barrel benefits aren’t given out based on rank.
You get them based on political negotiations. Pork barrel projects makes
jobs, which helps the economy, and it gives credit to the member who
made the project happen. A current version of a pork barrel project is
the war in Iraq. The president is giving out jobs, and he is getting
credit for it.
The Articles of
Confederation were the original constitution of America. However, the
Articles were a complete failure. One weakness is that all the states
had to agree on one law. Even if a single state disagreed, then the law
wouldn’t be created. Another weakness would be the states having the
power to draft civilians into the army. Random people were drafted into
the army, even if they didn’t want to. Also, the federal government
couldn’t solve problems in the states. This left the states to fend for
themselves.
