British Politician Sex is referring to a political scandal in 1963. The scandal involved the British Secretary of State for War, John Profumo, and a 21 year old call girl named Christine Keeler.

In late 1962, rumors began to spread about an affair between Profumo and Keeler. Profumo initially denied these rumors. This did him no good, however, as he was continually hounded by the media. The relationship between Profumo and Keeler worried the government and the people of Britain. They were afraid that she was getting information from Profumo and passing it on to spies. In response to rumors of the affair, Profumo finally made a speech to the House of Commons in March 1963. At this time he denied any wrong doing with Keeler. He said they were simply “on friendly terms.”

The relationship between Profumo and Keeler was important because it took place during the Cold War. The Cold War was a strategic and economic struggle between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States of America. The British were on the side of the United States. Keeler had been known to have had an affair with Eugene Ivanov, a Soviet spy. Keeler also lived with Stephen Ward, a well-known and wealthy doctor. Ward stole information and documents and gave them to Ivanov who passed them on to spy chiefs in Moscow.

Ten weeks after his first statement, Profumo admitted "with deep remorse" that he had misled the House of Commons. He claimed that he lied because he wanted to protect his wife and family. Profumo said that he did have an inappropriate relationship with Keeler and quickly resigned from his position in government.
