Ridge Crest Elementary School is #1 in the Nation!
Ridge Crest Elementary School is #1 in the Nation!Sunny Delight Beverages began a contest last August to help schools earn free books. Each
participating school could send in 20 UPC labels from qualifying Sunny D drink bottles and earn 20 new Scholastic books per classroom. Additionally, Sunny D had a sweepstakes in which 3 x 5 index cards with the word
'Proof' written on it could be sent in lieu of actual UPC labels. The 5 schools sending in the most labels and cards would win an additional $2,000.00 worth of books. Ridge Crest's Librarian, Kim Bowling, saw this as
a fantastic opportunity to get new books in the hands of their students. Bowling coordinated the entire endeavor, sending home parent letters and creating her own on site contest. Classes that sent in the most UPC
labels were rewarded with a 'Sunny D party'. Initially, they concentrated on the UPC labels and guaranteed books, but then a Sunny D 'fever' took hold of Ridge Crest and before they knew it, they were filling out,
stuffing, and mailing the index cards like a factory. Everyone pitched in. Students brought Bowling stacks and stacks of cards they filled out over the weekend! The last day of the contest, teachers, students, and
parents pitched in and stuffed like mad men. The Sunny D website was checked diligently for the announcement of the winners and on January 25, the news was posted, and Ridge Crest had won! Aside from the free books,
which are WONDERFUL, the unity and team spirit the contest brought to the school is priceless! Everyone is so proud, perhaps Bowling most of all. This shows that with hard work, determination, and teamwork, anything can
be accomplished!
