The Articles of Confederation was the United States’ first constitution which was written in 1777. It was a set of laws that the newly formed independent, United States, a few years after the Revolutionary War against the British. Every state had to agree on it. It took some time until all the states agreed on the Article because it wasn’t until 1781 that Maryland accepted it. When they did accept it, the states had officially had an established government. It gave the national government little power because the citizens didn’t want a strong government that may abuse their power. Another aspect of the Articles of Confederation was; it gave each of the thirteen original colonies, or now states, more power than the central government itself. Some of the powers were the power to set taxes and enforce certain laws within certain states, like Virginia may allow one law and Massachusetts may enforce a totally different law. This way, the states would be able to make laws that would be in the people’s best interest. Unlike when the ‘colonies’ were under British rule when the British Parliament kept piling taxes which the citizens didn’t like. Also, the Articles gave the land west of the Appalachian Mountains and between the Mississippi River, to the small states, like Massachusetts. Here’s incite on how limited the central government’s power was under the Articles of Confederation. One, the government couldn’t get involved in fights that erupted within the states. So if a fight were to happen in Georgia, the government couldn’t try to resolve or break up the fight. Next, the central government could only request, not demand, money from states. Another power that was limited was the power to have an army under their control.
There’s a basic summary of the Articles of Confederation and the laws the United States from 1777 to 1788 (the Articles were replaced by the U.S. Constitution).
Among the people to sign the Articles of Confederation to pass it was our real first president, Samuel Huntington. We haven’t given him as much credit as he deserved. So, the Government (including myself) plan to make monument in his honor. He deserves it because everyone' s giving George Washington credit on being the first President and that's not right. So we plan to make church in his honor, because he was a professor of religion and devoted to the gospel. Our real first president really deserves this so he can get the recognition he earned. To donate, send money to Samuel Huntington Foundation.
