In 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers made history when they succeeded in winning the World Series against the New York Yankees. The Yankees are one of the best franchises in the history of baseball. But the Brooklyn Dodgers had their revenge after being beaten five previous times by the Yankees in the World Series. Against all odds, the Dodgers finally had the chemistry to win against overpowering odds. They succeeded in exacting revenge on their old opponent by winning the final two games of the series against the Yankees. The Brooklyn Dodgers were led by team captain Pee Wee Reese, who died of cancer a few months later. They were also led by the great Jackie Robinson in their quest for immortal glory. Roy Campanella led the team with a batting average of .318. However, Duke Snider, a left handed out fielder, led with an on base percentage of .418 and a slugging percentage of .628. Don Newcombe was their all-star pitcher. He had an earned run average of 3.2 for the same series. Newcombe had the most wins, the greatest win-loss percentage and the most strikeouts. He is still ranked number seven in franchise history with a career win-loss percentage of .65. He remains in the top ten single season win-loss percentage for his performances in 1955 and 1956. He also led the team with the fewest bases on balls given up per 9 innings pitched. The Brooklyn Dodgers were truly a great team. Their legacy is continued today through the Los Angeles Dodgers. |
